Parents say the darndest things

Yesterday, approximately 2:00 p.m., in our kitchen.

Me: [With regard to something I’ve already forgotten] “…For Christ’s sake!”

Mom, ‘correcting’ me: “A____, it’s ‘for God’s sake!’

Today, 4:00 p.m., in our garage.

[Background: My father is a police office and a favourite expression of his is ‘foxtrot oscar’ which is basically code for F-off.]

Mom: “Foxtrough oscar!

I’ve really never understood either comment, usually expressed as an exclamation.

What does a person actually mean when they respond to an event or saying with the words, “For God’s sake,” or “For Christ’s sake?”

I always thought of them as being negative versus some sort of positive criticism.

Or take the whole, “Oh, my God!” thing. Somehow that exclamation has come into vogue by people who don’t even believe in Him. Strange …
