Wrapped Up In Books

We couldn’t hate you if we tried.

This past Saturday, Hockey Night in Canada pitted the Vancouver Canucks against the always-the-bridesmaid-never-the-bride-when-it-comes-to-the-Cup Leafs at the ACC. If you’re Canadian and haven’t been living beneath a rock for the past year, you’ll know that Mats Sundin didn’t continue on with the TML this season. I felt a little heartbroken when I read that the first time. I couldn’t believe, after 13 years, he’d choose to leave Toronto. But he did.

In his first game back at his former home and playing against his old teammates, few people jeered and booed him. The occasion did not go unrecognized. A tribute to the arguably best-ever Leaf was played during the first commercial break, and most 19,500 people in attendance gave him the ovation he deserved, deserter or not.

He may be Swedish, but he has the humility of a Canadian, through and through.
